Trip Itinerary for Mount College – International Service Trip

Tonga is a beautiful island nation that is in desperate need of help to rebuild homes for families after Tropical Cyclone Gita ripped through Tonga during February 2018.  Over 5 days we will build a family a concrete block house on the island of Eua, just off the coast of Nukualofa.  The trip departs the 31st August 2019 and returns on Tuesday 10th of September 2019.   You will also have the opportunity to go swimming, snorkeling and even whale watching as its the perfect season for humpback whales to migrate.  You may even see a whale from where we stay!

Sharing twin/triple hotel in Nukualofa; shared twin/triple room (with ensuite) in lodge on Eua Island with same gender room mate.  1night shared hotel at IBIS Budget Hotel at Auckland Airport on the way home.

Based on Air New Zealand group airfare on our trip dates.  Group airfare option available until 29th March 2019.  Sale fares are available from time to time and are of course on a first come first serve basis.

3 meals per day on Eua Island and Nukualofa plus water and fruit on building site.  Bring your own snacks.

Building Contribution

Each person contributes NZ$900 to fund the building materials.

Work you will be doing

No building experience is required on our trips as we teach you everything you need to know.  We will be building a concrete block home (6 metres by 8 metres) so typical work tasks included making mortar and block fill, laying blocks, building trusses and joinery , cutting steel, roofing, all under the watchful eye of our 2 building foremen and project manager.  Everyone works to their own limits and training in tasks is provided.

You will need to consult your doctor, however common vaccinations required are Tetanus, Diphtheria, MMR, Hepatitis A, typhoid, flu vax, chicken pox (unless you have had it). Dengue fever and zika are also present at times so DEET-based repellent is recommended. Remember it’s not just you who needs protection – it’s the local kids and families you interact with as well. You will be asked to sign a vaccination confirmation form for you before departure.  Hotels are air conditioned and lodge beds have mosquito nets.

No visa required for Tonga for New Zealand and Australian passports however 6 months validity after your arrive back in NZ on your passport is required.
